How to keep your flowers fresh for long

As a florist, one of the first things I tell new flower arrangers is that keeping flowers fresh begins the moment you bring them home. Start by trimming the stems about one inch at an angle using clean, sharp scissors or floral shears. Cutting at an angle increases the surface area that can absorb water and prevents the stem from sitting flat on the bottom of the vase. It’s also important to remove any leaves that would fall below the waterline, since submerged leaves break down quickly and encourage bacteria that can shorten the life of your flowers.

Always place your flowers in a clean vase filled with fresh, lukewarm water. Cleanliness matters more than many beginners realize—bacteria in a dirty vase can quickly clog the stems and prevent flowers from drinking properly. If you have flower food from a bouquet packet, add it to the water because it contains nutrients and antibacterial agents that help flowers stay vibrant. If you don’t have flower food, simply changing the water regularly will still make a big difference.

Where you display your arrangement also affects how long it will last. Flowers prefer cool environments, so keep them away from direct sunlight, heaters, and drafts. Another tip many people overlook is to avoid placing flowers near ripening fruit. Fruits release a natural gas that speeds up the aging process of flowers, which can cause them to wilt sooner than expected.

Finally, maintaining your arrangement with a little routine care will help it last much longer. Every two to three days, empty the vase, rinse it, refill it with fresh water, and trim the stems slightly again. This keeps the stems open so they can continue absorbing water effectively. If you notice any flowers starting to wilt or petals falling, remove them promptly so they don’t affect the rest of the bouquet. With these simple habits, even a novice flower arranger can keep their flowers looking fresh and beautiful for many extra days. 🌸💐

Enjoy your flowers!
